5th Anniverary (2001) Genesis Launch - Genesis Mishap Report

We waited for the launch to take place and the time came.

We waited for the spacecraft to collect its samples, and it did.

We waited for its return and its parachute deployment, but a problem.

The pieces picked up, and science salvaged.

Now we have a 231 page Genesis Mishap Report, and you can down load the 12.6 Mb file (on my computer) and read about what happened, why it was thought to have happened, and what is suggested be done on other missions to preclude these kinds of mistakes.

I've done this before, no problem, save some bucks, you can handle the job, right!!!

Interesting read but doesn't make for smiles.

Hope we go to the Moon with more attention to detail.

Genesis Mishap Report

Launched on August 8, 2001, Genesis was to collect samples of solar wind and return them to Earth, providing fundamental data to help scientists understand the formation of our solar system. On September 8, 2004, the sample return capsule drogue parachute did not deploy, and the capsule hit the ground.

A Mishap Board was established two days later. The Board has determined the direct cause of the mishap to be that sensors were in an inverted position because of an erroneous design.
