Participatory Exploration Summit

I find it mysterious how one idea can lead to another or how two
separate events can end at the same place. Something new discovered.
The Participatory Exploration Summit event that took place at NASA Ames
was mentioned. Ok.

I get SpaceRef email posts and of recent they have had a blurb about an
new service they are starting and that you could receive an invitation
to the "Alpha" testing by going to www.onorbit.com and filling in the
form they have there. Ok,

There is a hint of what will be happening with some dates listed.
See below.

Request an Invitation to On Orbit

SpaceRef presents On Orbit, a new personalized interactive service
launching in the near future. On Orbit is currently an invitation-only
alpha service, which means you must receive an invitation from On Orbit
to sign up for the service.
[Fill in the form here. - LRK -]

Snip
What is On Orbit?
June 19: It's personalized and interactive
June 20: It's Web 2.0
June 21: It will start in Alpha so you can have a say in what goes to Beta
June 22: It's commercial, community and cognitive
June 25: It may help you find a job
June 26: Is participatory <http://conference.nasacolab.org/>
June 27: Is where Government meets Alt Space
June 28: ...?

Have what it takes to be On Orbit producer?
Then contact us at orbitproducer At onorbit.com and get interactive.
These are non-paying positions to start.

There was the June 26 date and the link which takes you to the web page
for the Participatory Exploration Summit at Ames.
Well, back to a place mentioned and I though I should poke around a bit
more.
Come with me.

If you went on June 25 you could have signed up for a tour of NASA Ames
if you were one of the the first 35.
The Summit instructions are here if you want to see what was expected of
the participants.

The session topics are Hot-Links to more information about the sessions.

If you would like to be part of a community that is interested in
developing space then Session 2 has some ideas and links that might work
for you.

Having mentioned my reading of "Return To Mars" by Ben Bova and his
portrayal of using VR suits to entertain those folks that were still
Earth side, I found the material in Session 3 worth considering. Make
sure you look at the Session links at the bottom of the long list of ideas.

Will just copy the Session 4A and 4B links and you can check that out as
well. Much food for thought for us who may never go to the Moon or Mars
but would like to participate in the exploration and share with a larger
community.

I just finished reading Ben Bova's novel "RETURN TO MARS" where VR suits are used to send back to Earth images of what the astronauts
are working on.

The book was copyright 1999 and has enough hard science fact to make the fiction
seem real. We would just need to go to Mars and back again to make it the real
thing.

If you had a VR rig here on Earth then you got to FEEL the actions of the
astronaut as they picked at rocks and scaled the cliffs of Mars.

Shuttle Atlantis landed Edwards AFB - STS117 Mission - Great Viewing NASA TV

Have had some great viewing of the STS117 mission on NASA TV by way of
the Internet.
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/

Watching the final close out at Edwards.

Expedition Flight Engineer Sunita L. Williams returned from her record
breaking tour on the ISS and Expedition 15/16 Flight Engineer Clayton C.
Anderson was sent to the station.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts117/index.html

The ISS and Shuttle were viewable in the evening skies here in Tracy
this week and I watched with the neighbors out in front of the house.
Our street light were no help but the craft were both bright specks in
the sky as they flew over. Only took a few minutes.

The Moon and Venus were bright in the sky as well.
Was nice meeting some of the neighbor's kids out with their parents.

Handed out printouts made from Heavens-Above charts and visible pass
times for our location.
Current observing site: *Tracy, 37.740°N, 121.424°W*
http://www.heavens-above.com/

Was fun explaining about the Moon moving to the East each night as it
orbits Earth and watching it set to the West as the Earth turned and
looking at the different ISS tracks as we rotated under the its 92
minute orbit.

Watching the relative change for positions of Venus, Saturn, and the
Moon each evening suddenly gives you a feel for being on spaceship Earth.

Thanks for looking up with me either here or out in the street.

ESA seeks candidates for simulated 'Missions to Mars' in 2008/2009
19 June 2007
ESA is preparing for future human exploration missions to Mars. We are
currently looking for volunteers to take part in a 520-day simulated
Mars mission.

To go to Mars is still a dream and one of the last gigantic challenges.
But one day some of us will be on precisely that journey to the Red
Planet. A journey with no way out once the spaceship is on a direct path
to Mars.

Before it even gets underway, human Mars exploration is headed for a
political trainwreck
<http://www.speakeasy.org/%7Edonaldfr/marstrn.html>. The likelihood of
trouble is so great that advocates for human exploration of the Solar
System probably should look elsewhere -- toward a return to Earth's moon
or asteroid mining expeditions.

Building the Space Station
<http://www.speakeasy.org/%7Edonaldfr/buildss.html> represents a unique
point in human history. Even as it is finally getting started, few
people - supporters and opponents alike - realize just how big and
potentially important the project really is, or how difficult building
it will be. Learning to assemble large and complex structures in the
microgravity of space is fully comparable to humanity's invention of
large-scale construction in stone. In building the Space Station,
humanity is learning nothing less than how to build permanent structures
in the microgravity environment that dominates the Universe.

On Tuesday morning, June 19th, space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to undock
from the International Space Station. On Tuesday night, the pair will fly in
tandem over many US towns and cities including Detroit, Washington DC, San
Francisco and Denver. Typical flybys take place shortly after sunset, with the
pair first appearing in the northwest (look for the Big Dipper) and soaring
overhead from there. The space shuttle appears first, followed by the ISS.
Both spacecraft are bright and easy to see with the naked eye. Double flybys
continue on Wednesday night, June 20th, before Atlantis returns to Earth on
Thursday, June 21st.
