SANTA FE - Governor Bill Richardson today announced that Virgin
Galactic has signed a 20 year lease agreement with the State of New
Mexico. Virgin Galactic's world headquarters will be established in
New Mexico and its operations will be located at New Mexico's
Spaceport America, the nation's first purpose-built commercial
spaceport.

"The signing of this agreement is a momentous day for our state and
has cemented New Mexico as the home of commercial space travel,"
Governor Bill Richardson said. "I want to thank Virgin Galactic for
partnering with us to create a whole new industry that is going to
transform the economy of Southern New Mexico—creating thousands of
jobs, generating money for education, boosting tourism and attracting
other companies and economic opportunities to the area."

Should be interesting to watch as construction starts.
Time to re-read some of those science fiction novels and see how close
they catch the dream.

Spaceport America go for launch as Virgin Galactic signs on
By Jacqui Cheng | Published: January 02, 2009 - 10:55AM CT

Get ready to hear more about "spaceports" in the near future. A
facility now has the green light to be built in New Mexico as part of
a just-signed 20-year lease agreement with Virgin Galactic. New Mexico
Governor Governor Bill Richardson announced the historic lease
agreement this week that will get things off the ground at Spaceport
America, the nation's first launch point for suborbital tourism.

In order for its backers to receive the next level of Spaceport
America funding, the state of New Mexico mandated that it must first
sign on an anchor tenant. New Mexico's Spaceport Authority just
received a launch license from the Federal Aviation Administration
days before signing the anchor tenant agreement with Virgin Galactic,
all of which has paved the way for construction to begin near Las
Cruces, New Mexico early this year.

"The signing of this agreement is a momentous day for our state and
has cemented New Mexico as the home of commercial space travel,"
Richardson said in a statement. "I want to thank Virgin Galactic for
partnering with us to create a whole new industry that is going to
transform the economy of Southern New Mexico—creating thousands of
jobs, generating money for education, boosting tourism and attracting
other companies and economic opportunities to the area."
