THE EARTH, MAY WE VIEW FROM ....

Geoff in New Zealand sent me several links which I will pass for your consideration.
As you will note, our astronauts are getting better at communicating with the general population and hopefully they will generate an interest in not only looking up, but in looking back down at us on mother Earth.

Maybe today's social media will spread the word and generate an interest in space, as a new frontier.
I know I enjoyed my small part in letting us see what Lunar Prospector was doing as it went around the Moon.

Today we have even more robotic craft at the Moon, Mars, and Beyond, and it sounds like real time tweets from the ISS are generating a following as well.
Hope we have the money to add more to what has already been done.

Subject: 'Forget Mars, we should live on the MOON': Chris Hadfield says the red planet is too big a leap for Nasa at the moment | Daily Mail Online
Canadian Chris Hadfield tells MailOnline we should go back to the moon
The former astronaut says current plans to go to Mars are too ambitious
Instead we should be looking to live on the moon for 'generations'
He also responds to comments from Nasa chief Charles Bolden last week who said he had 'raised the bar for astronaut'
Hadfield does not think he put pressure on astronauts to engage more
And he wants to see more cooperation in space in the future
Hadfield was speaking after the launch of his new book 'You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes'
----------------------------------------------
I tend to agree that at least at first we should learn how to live is on the Moon.
Either place will be extremely hard to accomplish and expensive so we will need to find some way to make the risk worthwhile.

Cost - Benefit

Probably a lot easier to send Tweets from the Moon with only a one and a half second OWLT to the Moon vs 4 to 24 minutes to Mars. :-)

The real space oddity, Chris Hadfield, is down-to-Earth

Ex-NASA man wants to give everyone the chance to know what it’s like in space.
NEW YORK—What do you do after you’ve achieved the ultimate goal of your avocation—not once, but three times? That’s the question facing Chris Hadfield, who capped 25 years of NASA service by commanding both the International Space Station and an audience of millions on YouTube and Twitter. Hadfield gave a partial answer recently during a public talk at the American Museum of Natural History: get as many people as possible to understand the experience and try to use that to keep the public supporting a program of space exploration.

Hope he continues to excite people with his tweets and books. Sounds like he took a LOT of pictures.

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate....
I have enjoyed watching this several times - even if the music is a bit eerie.
Thought provoking and if you watch to the end there are suggestions we are taking note and making changes.
This was published 5 years ago. I wonder what they would say now.

PIA00452: Solar System Portrait - Earth as 'Pale Blue Dot'

Original Caption Released with Image:

This narrow-angle color image of the Earth, dubbed 'Pale Blue Dot', is a part of the first ever 'portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyager's great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun. This blown-up image of the Earth was taken through three color filters -- violet, blue and green -- and recombined to produce the color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification.

To Go To Space or Not To Go To Space - That is the question

E-mail from the NSS says that George Whitesides is going to testify before the US Senate.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Next Wednesday, May 7, NSS Executive Director George Whitesides will testify before the United States Senate on NASA and the nation's space policies. We would like to solicit your input as a member of the National Space Society for this important testimony. The testimony will be used by Congress as it considers reauthorization of NASA, which is the periodic direction from Congress to NASA on the priorities and programs of the agency. The hearing will be presided over by Florida's senior Senator, Bill Nelson.

We would appreciate your comments on the future of the U.S. space program, its importance to the country, and the potential gap in human spaceflight capability, following the retirement of the Space Shuttle. Due to the immediate timeline, we would request that you submit your comments no later than Monday, May 5. You can email your comments directly to George Whitesides at: george@nss.org

Well the 5th is over, wonder what will come of this.

In the mean time, space comes to us in the form of asteroids whether we go there or not.
Others are launching satellites into space and learning more about same.
The Shuttle Discovery is getting ready for its next mission and then there will be a time of no more.
Care to bounce down in a field again?

Canadian satellite to detect Earth hits

http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Canadian_satellite_to_detect_Earth_hits_999.html

by Staff Writers

Ottawa (UPI) May 2, 2008

Canadian researchers are working on a tiny satellite that will alert the world to the potential of asteroid strikes.

"This is the first space-based asteroid-searching telescope," said Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary (Alberta), one of two principal scientists for the satellite.

He told the Canwest News Service the Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite, set to be launched within two years is "the first space-based asteroid-searching telescope."

Once completed, the NEOSSat device will weigh only 135 pounds, and will be the size of a small suitcase, the report said.

"I think the most exciting thing about this mission is we are going to find asteroids that are accessible from our planet," Hildebrand said.

He said the mini-satellite would also help define celestial origins.

"We've been to the moon. There's always more you can do (there), but asteroids have so much more to teach us about the origins of the solar system," Hildebrand told the news agency.

INTERNET ADVISORY: 2008-018
Jan. 31, 2008

Journey to Saturn From Your Computer

Want a peek at Saturn as seen from space? A new interactive 3-D viewer
that uses a game engine and allows users to travel to Saturn and see
it the way the Cassini spacecraft sees it is now online at
http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/CASSIE and
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/cassie.html .

The Cassini at Saturn Interactive Explorer makes the real Cassini
mission data fully available in three colorful, easy-to-use
expeditions.

The "Where is Cassini Now?" expedition shows exactly where the Cassini
spacecraft is and what it is doing each moment over the current
24-hour period. Viewers can see the spacecraft move in its orbit and
maneuver according to instructions from mission scientists and
navigators at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

With the "Mission Overview" expedition, look back in time as Cassini
orbited the Saturn system over the past 3.5 years, and fast-forward
into the future to see where it is headed. Users can control two
virtual cameras to see Cassini fly by Saturn and its moons.

The "Saturn's Moons" expedition gives an in-depth peek at seven of
Saturn's moons, providing useful facts and interactive surface views
of each one.

More information on the Cassini mission is available at
http://www.nasa.gov/cassini and http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov .

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the
European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of
the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the
Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate,
Washington. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled
at JPL.

ASTEROID FLYBY: Asteroid 2007 TU24 is flying past Earth this week at a distance
of only 334,000 miles (1.4 lunar distances). NASA radars tracking the asteroid
confirm that there is no danger of a collision, but it will be close enough for
amateur astronomers to photograph through mid-sized backyard telescopes. At
closest approach on Jan. 29th, the asteroid will glide through the constellations Andromeda and Cassiopeia glowing like a 10th magnitude star.

Mercury fly-by a success.

Thanks to your eyes out there, I am reminded that we had a most news
worthy event taking place at planet Mercury.
MESSENGER made a successful fly-by.

As NASAs MESSENGER neared Mercury on January 14, 2008, the spacecraft
took this image of the planets full crescent. The image shows portions
of Mercury previously seen by Mariner 10, but when Mariner 10 flew by
the planet at each of its encounters, the sun was nearly overhead. For
this MESSENGER flyby, in contrast, the sun is shining obliquely on
regions near the day/night boundary (called the terminator) on the
right-hand side of the crescent, revealing the surface topography. This
image illustrates how MESSENGER, during its future flybys and subsequent
orbital mission, will teach scientists much about the portion of Mercury
already imaged by Mariner 10. Credit: NASA/Johns Hopkins University

Many things going on and I have been remiss in mentioning them.

There are two nations with satellites going around the Moon.

not. Still, thinking about what would be helpful if I was building a

Many of you are doing interesting things and a time to be excited. Just
not enough hours in the day.

Have a daughter in Iraq and her kids will be glad when she is home
safe. She lost three men in her platoon the other day. Nice that we
have the Internet and e-mail to communicate with but not the same as
being state side. Maybe those that go to a Lunar Colony or a Martian

the here and now.

SOLAR WIND DRIES VENUS: Europe's Venus Express spacecraft has made an
important discovery: the solar wind dries out Venus. Unlike Earth, Venus
has no global magnetic field to deflect particles from the sun; when
solar wind hits Venus it erodes the upper atmosphere. Hydrogen and
oxygen atoms fly into space, removing from Venus the chemical building
blocks of water. The process makes an already hellish planet even worse.
