The Best Way

January 12, 2006

Good evening,

How do we excite the World into supporting the quest to launch to the Moon
and explore new fields in space for the human race?

Quote... "Let me know how I can best serve."

David Robertson took me up on the above request and we have had a few
iterations on his suggestions. Much appreciated David.

Brain storming is fun. You are free to make suggestions that can be bounced
off previous inputs and new ideas come out of the discussion.

This is a moderated list in that if you send something to the list it will
just be forwarded to me, so sending something to me directly is the easiest.

That means you and I see the idea but the rest of the list does not, so no
brain storming as a whole. However, 1000 thoughts might be a bit much to
digest at one time and there is the chance that the list gets spammed from
someone with their own agenda at the expense of others.

That being said, you are certainly encouraged to pass your ideas and
suggestions along, and I will do my best to reciprocate and steal whatever I
can for the benefit of all. :-)

While passing notes back and forth with David, Macworld took place and we
were informed of the popularity of the Mac iPod. Which brought up the
thought that maybe if items on going to the Moon were Podcast you could go
about your off computer time with buds stuck in your ear, getting educated
on how to go space. Can you picture an Astronaut on the Moon with an iPod?
Take some entertainment with you on the backside of the Moon where Earthly
reception wouldn't be too good. hmmmmm. An Off World iPod, impervious to
regolith fines.

iTunes 4.9 First Look: Apple takes on Podcasting
http://playlistmag.com/features/2005/06/podcastingfirstlook/index.php

Getting your hands on your favorite podcasts just got easier with Tuesday’s
release of iTunes 4.9. Here’s our look at the new podcasting features built
in to this update. June 28, 2005

---------------------------------------------------

That made me think about Dr. David Livingston and his SPACE SHOW where you
can call in and talk with someone being interviewed. That reminded me of
the Science@NASA web pages that are in various languages and have a down
loadable audio link by Dr. Tony Phillips.

Some do better with reading and the Lunar Enterprise Daily is an on-line
publication that encourages and stimulates the peaceful and progressive
development of the Moon.

At the end of one of my missives to David I said, "SO, MAYBE IS OK TO PUSH THE IDEA OF WHAT A THRILL IT WOULD BE TO PARTICIPATE IN GOING TO SPACE, AND SOLICIT IDEAS FROM THE LUNAR-UPDATE LIST AND THEN ASK TO DOUBLE THE READERSHIP TO FIND MORE IDEAS."

And his reflection was, "Greater membership and promotion of advanced
science will give an opportunity to encourage more people to become active
participants. It is surprising how a few hundred well argued letters can
change votes. What do you think about a printed publication?"

WELL!

How about it, more papers from you in your fields of interest, more
suggestions on how to interest others, a level of enthusiasm that will make
the kids around you take notice and look up?

Do you know someone that has some ideas on what is needed to get to the Moon
and would like to share it with me? Better yet, do you have information
that can be shared with those around you?

Grumman Lunar Module Simulator
Bethpage and Binghamton, NY, 1968
This Lunar Module (LM) Mission Simulator, a large, complex device, was in
operation at the Kennedy Space Center between 1968 and 1972. It was used by
every Apollo astronaut to train for landing on the Moon prior to their
mission. Only one was built, and, remarkably, it survived in good condition.
This is a very historically significant artifact, one of the few key pieces
remaining from the Apollo program.

A space simulator can be as simple as a spacecraft simulation program
running on your PC or as elaborate as a detailed, full scale hardware simulation of a shuttle cockpit.

Or perhaps it's a large scale group simulation carried out over the internet
in which the participants play different roles, e.g. mission controllers or
astronauts, in carrying out a mission scenario such as launching a satellite
from the shuttle.

This section provides links and descriptions of all sorts of web resources
related to both software and hardware space simulations.

---------------------------------------------------

I guess what I am saying is that I don't know "The Best Way" to excite the
general population to support the idea of going to the Moon and developing
Space. I DO think that sharing ideas may well keep this window of
opportunity alive and exciting.

December 23, 2005: NASA scientists have observed an explosion on the moon.
The blast, equal in energy to about 70 kg of TNT, occurred near the edge of
Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Rains) on Nov. 7, 2005, when a 12-centimeter-wide
meteoroid slammed into the ground traveling 27 km/s.

"What a surprise," says Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) researcher Rob
Suggs, who recorded the impact's flash. He and colleague Wes Swift were
testing a new telescope and video camera they assembled to monitor the moon
for meteor strikes. On their first night out, "we caught one," says Suggs.

Fred Becker passed this on the insideksc group post. - LRK -
-------------------------------------------------------------
The National Space Society (NSS) Florida Space Coast chapter invites
you to view the launch of Pluto New Horizons with us at the LISATS
viewing site in Cape Canaveral. LISATS, the Launch Information
Service and Amateur Television System is a HAM radio relay with
public address system that will have sounds from the countdown crew
as launch progresses. NSS will also have a table with free copies of
Ad Astra magazine, the publication of the National Space Society, and
other literature. The NSS table goes active at 10:00 on Tuesday and
stays through launch which is scheduled for 1:24 p.m. The site is
just west of the Port Canaveral exit on Highway 528 West. For more
information see:

www.lisats.org
http://www.lisats.org/launch.htm
Directions per the LISATS site:

"If coming from Orlando, drive out SR-528 (known as "The Bee Line
Expressway") towards the Cruise Ship Terminals. Follow the Green
Signs to the "B" docks, and take the exit for the "B" docks, allowing
you to turn around (If you wish, travel another 1/2 mile and turn
into the McDonalds to bring a "fast Food Picnic" to the site).

Once you are traveling Westbound on SR-528, once again go past the
exit for the "A" docks, and just after you pass the sign that says
"Airport 41 Miles, Orlando 52 Miles", you'll want to pull off the
highway to the right, and park beside the bridge you almost went over."
